We know that Bryan Fuller and his PUSHING DAISES crew plans on doing a WONDERFALLS cross-over this season on his show, but what else is on the agenda for the second season and just what drove Fuller to create such an odd assortment of characters and ideas. It is all here in part two of our exclusive interview with the creator of the show.
iF Magazine: The first season DVD was recently released, anything you would like to point fans to in terms of extras or anything they might get a kick out of?
BRYAN FULLER: Lot of really fun extras and I watched them the other day. There are 18 mini-movies and different aspects of the show. One thing is that people get frustrated with is that the navigation menu is a little difficult to manage. Nothing is clearly labeled, but I kind of liked it.
iF: Is there any difference in the Blu-ray version in terms of extras?
FULLER: Same DVD package. When we are hitting all cylinders and we underestimated what it takes to produce the show effectively and some of the visual effects are as strong as others. Watching some of that stuff on the Blu-ray, I say that’s not a good effect. Some of the episodes where we did not nail the visual effects, it doesn’t look great on either format for that matter. But fortunately the vast majority we are very proud of.
iF: You also created and wrote DEAD LIKE ME, another quirky undead series, I’m asuming that the mystery of death is something that fascinates you?
FULLER: Raised Catholic and the ho-ha about heaven and hell. People seem to lose the point about living right now and people always got lost in what happens when I die. Worry about living. The death episodes are interesting to look at life through the prism of death and the good thing never lasts forever. Not an obsession with death, but an obsession with life. Plus, as a kid I went to a lot of funerals and it was always a good time because they always had food and people were celebrating life and when you are a child, you are
iF: Have you had any issues with anyone in your family saying that you write about too much death or you’re too dreary?
FULLER: The deaths on the show are meant to be lighter and we don’t get consumed by the negative aspects. Death is a very real part of our lives and it is sad and difficult and something we have to deal with so in the show we try to make it as light as possible.
iF: What surprises can we expect to build more momentum and sustain
viewers in season 2?
FULLER: It's a much different pace and sometimes we will have an episode that some people will view as a first season episode. And I think I have not differentiated between the two. The big difference is the emphasis of the different worlds on Earth. We did that last year, but this year it is a much more conscious choice. We introduce Steven Root as a character in episode five. He is a great device to bring all the characters together in a concise murder mystery in an arc over multiple episodes. We begin a TWIN PEAKSian approach to the show. If TWIN PEAKS was a romantic comedy that’s what PUSHING DAISES will be in the second season.
iF: So be honest, are you a big fan of pies? And can you cook your own?
FULLER: I love pies. I am much more a pie man than a cake man. I prefer pie to cake. With the show, I filled with some many things that I love and pies, bees, pop-up books and I want to be able to turn on my computer and be excited about my writing. I have never successfully cooked a pie but I make a mean mac and cheese.
iF: you also wrote for STAR TREK VOYAGER, which is quite the opposite of PUSHING DAISIES, what do you find you enjoy more the quirky or the science fiction. Do you think or do you want to ever get back into sci –fi genre?
FULLER: Absolutely. I told my agent and told the people of J.J. Abrams team I want to create another STAR TREK series and have an idea that I’m kicking around. I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colors and attitude. I loved VOYAGER and DEEP SPACE NINE, but they seem to have lost the ‘60s fun and I would love to take it back to its origin.
Michael from Brooklyn NY sez.... I also think the time has come for Star Trek to return to TV. Since Bryan said he wants to do a show in the spirit of the orginal, I think a show about Christopher Pike's tenure as captain of the Enterprise should be explored more.

Sweetlillisa from Nebraska sez.... It is time for another Star Trek. I really love Star Trek. I have missed a new series, but I do love all of the old series, so I do watch them.

Gene from Hollywood sez.... Being drawn to bright colors is no qualification or justification to be given the next Star Trek series. You already did Voyager, Bryan, so it's time to let it go.
