Exclusive Movie News: LOST'S DOMINIC MONAGHAN WEIGHS IN ON THE BATTLE OVER THE HOBBIT
The actor hopes for a peaceful resolution between Peter Jackson and New Line

LOCATION: The TCAS
THE SKINNY: Dominic Monaghan while promoting the next portion of this season of ABC’s hit series LOST, stopped to comment to iF on the state of affairs with THE HOBBIT movie (prequel to the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy) which is locked in a battle between New Line Cinema and director Peter Jackson.
When asked point blank what he thought of the bitter war over the rights to the Tolkien story, the actor very wisely stated, “ This is a very iffy subject that you have to be careful with professionally as an actor because I’ve worked with New Line Cinema and I’ve worked with Pete Jackson and I have good relationships with both of them. My personal feeling as a fan is I think it’s a real shame that New Line and Pete Jackson don’t seem to be able to work out what’s going to happen with THE HOBBIT. I think fans of that franchise would like to see New Line Studios attached with Pete Jackson directing."
The actor continued to reinforce his stance that he only hoped for some sort of successful resolution in the battle and maintained his praise for both Jackson and New Line.

Although Peter Jackson is a very good director... I'm not sure I cared for his "reinventing" the Lord of the Rings story... the book was an amazing story and the movies should have reflected that. So if Pete plans on writing a "new" Hobbit as well that he can just stay home.

New Line and Peter should put away differences for the time being to mutually accomplish something bigger than both of them together- an epic and historical film! For the fans, for the benefit of all, for crying out loud people! get it together!

PJ did a pretty good job of LOTRs, but as previously stated he did make a few changes that did not have to be made. Another director COULD have made a better job, but then the question is who?
It still comes back to PJ.
PJ needs to make The Hobbit. Make it nice and light hearted until the end. Have the end scene being the Messenger of Mordor turning up at the Lonely Mountain asking for Baggins and a trifle of a ring... Anice gloomy forbidding ending Ahhh
A though I wonder would Tarantino would do it?!!? hahahahaha

generally speaking, the bottom line is usually the deal maker/breaker. With Jackson at the helm New Line is guaranteed a pretty penny and a quality product. what's the hold up??

I loved what Peter Jackson did with the LOTR trilogy! It would really be a shame if he could not continue with the Hobbit and any other movies that may appear in the future! He is the best & really brought the movies to life for me! I cannot go very long without watching them and feeling like I could be a part of the lives of those wonderful beings! I would be disappointed if they chose someone other than Peter Jackson; but would probably view the movie at least once to see how anyone else measured up to him. I really do not think anyone else could do as well as he did!!!!! My best wishes to you Dom and to Peter as well; for a quick resolution to this sad issue!

I loved the Lord of the Rings movies Peter Jackson and his crew did a beautiful job. For that reason I think if anyone else directs The Hobbit I will also boycott the movie. It has to be Peter that makes it. Anyone else would ruin it.

I've read practically all books pertaining to Middle Earth, and let me tell you making LOTR wasn't easy. Peter Jackson made a great job building up the 3 movies..He has the knowledge and experience about Middle Earth...let him make the Hobbit..Just look how many awards they won for the Return of th King?? He'll do the same thing for the Hobbit, trust me..

Shame on New Line! I too will boycott this movie if Peter Jackson is not to be involved! He did modify the content of the LotR books but imagine how the movie would have been long and how expensive it would have been if he did not! But he made a wonderful job and I'm sorry but I have found nothing "Hollywood-esque" about the movies. We all have our opinions, I respect yours but respect mine. Peter Jackson is very talented and I hope, as a Tolkien and Jackson fan, that this dispute will be resolved soon. I hope that New Line Cinema considers what has been written on this website and many others. Kudos to Dom for his wise comment!

Class act response from Dom. PJ's response to Shaye. Classy. Shaye's comments, not so much. As a fan of the LOTR movies and of the books(since childhood), I would be uninterested in a "Hobbit" movie without PJ and his team. Sure there were a few changes to the "LOTR" storyline, but overall, PJ and his team presented Tolkien's vision beautifully. I truly feel PJ would treat "The Hobbit" as lovingly as he did "LOTR". No other should be entrusted with it. If New Line foolishly tries to go ahead without PJ and his team, I'm afraid NL will pay the price. Many, including myself, will boycott it and other NL movies. Hopefully, common sense will prevail and Tolkien's legacy will be handled by the right man. PJ.
Also, one can only wonder why New Line is refusing to show the books if there is nothing to hide. They tried to keep the LOTR actors from their rightfull money so why not try with Peter when more money would be involved. NL has already established they are capable of trying to hide any money owed. PJ is legally allowed by contract to see the information he is asking for.

The only way the hobbit would ever sell tickets like the Lord of the Rings did is if it's directed by the same guy. It wasn't the title of the movies that sold tickets, it was the movies. I know about a hundred people who would boycott this film if not made by Peter Jackson and I've read about a million others. Get PJ back on this project.

J-Rod from chattanooga,TN sez....
Maybe "The Hobbit" is a more children-oriented story, but who really wants to see the movie made as some cheesy, ridiculous kids movie? The only way this movie will be worth making is if PJ makes it in the same style as the LOTR trilogy. I have zero interest in seeing another director's take on it. Also, it would be lame with different actors playing Gandalf, Gollum, and Elrond.

I disagree with Jeff as well. If PJ didn't make LOTRs I doubt whether we would have ever seen it on screen. I have read the books several times and love them, but realise changes had to be made for the story to be told in a movie. It is very easy to be an arm chair critic of the film making process, in the end of the day unless you can do better I don't think much of your criticism. I think PJ did a great job with LOTRs and unless he directs "The Hobbit" this household will boycott the movie.

The Advisor from a place sez....
I disagree with Jeff, Peter is what caused the whole magic of Lord of the Rings. He wrote the script, he helped choose the actors, and pretty much everything, and it's that aspect from Peter that made it so magical and incredible, you listen to the actors with what they say and it was totally Peter.
So all I can say is that there is no Director who could pull off the same Middle-Earth as Peter Jackson or Better! Not Sam Raimi, not STeven Spielberg, not George Lucas, not any director!
So Peter, Direct The Hobbit!!
1/18/2007 3:36:53 PM
Geoff from Canada sez....
The power and greatness of the LOTR films stems not from Pete, but from everybody that surrounded him. If it were possible to maintain the continuity of the look and feel of Middle-earth without that team, then it wouldn't matter whether or not Jackson was directing the Hobbit. Unfortunately, no other director would be able to re-assemble that same team of designers, writers and producers that resulted in such a job well done with the Lord of the Rings. For all the isolated inadequacies of the book-to-film adaptation of the Lord of the Rings, PJ is likely to be the best and only man for the job.

Jeff from Chicago sez....
PJ is not God when it comes to Middle Earth. He made plenty of unneccessary changes to Tolkien's story not to mention stupid Hollywood-esque decisions like the flaming Denethor and repeatedly throwing characters off cliffs to fake their deaths. He is not the ultimate LOTR authority. Anyone who grew to love LOTR from the books can tell you that. The Hobbit had a life of its own long before PJ arrived and long before LOTR for that matter. It is a completely different type of story from LOTR. It is a CHILDREN'S BOOK. I have serious doubts that PJ would even recognize that difference. But The Hobbit is bigger than PJ or New Line, and if they can't get their act together, someone out there will step up and do the story justice. It will happen, with or without PJ and New Line, and maybe it would be better without!

Peter Jackson did an amazing job on LOTR and i don't believe any other director would have done it justice. If PJ doesn't direct "the hobbit" it would be an insult to Tolkien and his fans. Come on New Line, You need Jackson to make this film as amazing as it should be.

Jed from Miami sez....
New Line doesn't want to make The Hobbit as a "prequel" to the franchise, they want to make a "kicka**" movie and to hell with tolkien fans. If PJ is not involved w/ The Hobbit, then i will not watch it. i think that new line will be facing a massive boycott unless jackson is directing.

I dream of seeing The Hobbit directed by PJ. Wouldn't it be fabulous if it came out in December (of whatever year) just as the LOTR films did? Ideally it would include as many of the former cast members and creative teams (Howard Shore, Weta Workshop, etc.) as possible. In my dream the associated books, CDs, DVDs, packaging, action figures, and jewelry would be consistent with what we already know and love. Come on, guys! Settle!

I think Dom chose his words very wisely indeedx... I don't think either side is right in making this into such a big fuss but i guess New Line has bigger responsibility in so rejecting an audit... I liked what Dom said--i'm glad that he didn't choose sides since i think, like the majority of us don't know the whole story behind both sides. However, i still think New Line is more at fault in this mess... i just have this feeling. :P

Yeah, it's too bad. One wonders exactly why Bob Shaye won't relent (the whole debacle is based on PJ suing New Line for monies he believes he's owed for sales on The Fellowship of the Ring DVD sales, and New Line refused to open its books for inspection). If there is no malfeasance on New Line's part, what do they have to hide? It's also within Peter Jackson's legal rights to request such an inspection. It would be a real shame to pass over the franchise to someone else, because frankly, I don't believe there's anyone else out there with the understanding, love, and resources to do it right. Peter Jackson is the man for the job, and New Line is going to regret it if they don't go with him.

I understand a working actor having to be diplomatic. Fortunately, I don't have to be. Peter Jackson and his team's work was brilliant on The Lord of the Rings from start to finish.
If he doesn't make it; I won't go see it. I further have no plans to go see any other film that New Line puts out based on Robert Shaye's public bashing of Jackson in print. Very 'unclassy' man.

Elfie from Pennsylvania sez....
Dom's statement is very considerate to both sides of the issue, but as good of an actor as he is, I as a LotR and Tolkien fan must take Peter Jackson's side in this completely. Newline has gone too far in this and as far as I'm concerned, without Peter Jackson, there is no (or will not be) "The Hobbit" movie. Only Mr. Jackson can do justice in making such films, and changing directors now will only slander the name of J.R.R. Tolkien.

I think it is a shame that New Line and Peter Jackson cannot come to terms with LOTR trilogy. If "The Hobbit" is to be made into a movie I feel that the only real choice of Director would be Peter Jackson. He did such a wonderful job with LOTR I simply cannot see any one else doing it. And, frankly, I don't think any one else could possibly do it justice.

If New Line is too stubborn, then the only thing matters to me is Peter Jackson is producing and directing HOBBIT, regardless of which film studio. Anything else is irrelevant, including Mr. Robert Shaye.
