Okay, to be fair, it's only a morsel of information, but we couldn't resist sharing it with our devoted readers

LOCATION:
THE SKINNY: While LOST co-creator Damon Lindelof made a major presence at ABC’s Television Critics event, appearing on two separate panels throughout the day, iF Magazine couldn’t pass up a chance to ask the busy writer/producer about STAR TREK XI which he is producing with fellow LOST co-creator J.J. Abrams.
"We’re not giving out any information about TREK at all," Lindelof says with a smile but did give this company line. "J.J. and I are producing it and Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci are writing it. Paramount has announced a release date of 2008. That’s all that’s official."
When asked if J.J. would actually direct the film, he says that is still to be determined.
"That is not confirmed," adds Lindelof who says the goal of the movie to make it accessible to all audiences.
"We are trying to write a movie that Trekkers and my mother in New Jersey will all understand and love," says Lindelof.
And having been on such a mainstream mythology driven show like LOST, has some of that rubbed off on the development of the new TREK film?
"All I’ll say is, the fundamental J.J. Abrams approach to storytelling is one I highly subscribe to which is character, character, character and we’re applying that same model on to TREK," says Lindelof. "I think fundamentally to set a movie in space and the future where crazy things are happening and they’re all aliens is not as engaging as ‘how are the people involved?’"
LOST begins the second half of its third season on February 7, 2007 in its new time slot, Wednesday’s at 10:00 p.m.

The problem with "character, character, character,..", when it comes at the expense of a solid plot, is that you can wind up with pretty crappy, and horribly dull, character interaction.
Fans, and unfortunately all too many exec's, have latched onto "character, character, character,.." as a cure all, but professional writers know better than to trust such simplistic approaches to story telling.
When you're the guy (or gal) that has to pen the tale, you quickly learn that even exquisite characters are of little use in telling an engaging story without something compelling for those characters TO DO, and that speaks to plot.
What I'm affraid of here is that we're headed for "90210 in Space", i.e., a soapy tale of the angst of youth as it plays out in Starfleet Academy instead of a Hollywood high school.
That's NOT a particularly good recipe for a tale that's going to "reinvigorate" the Star Trek Franchise, but it's an excellent recipe for one that'll finally kill Trek.

Um, probably the guy producing it who was told by the head people at Paramount, duh.
