THE SKINNY: As if he doesn’t already have enough damn projects on the burner already, Guillermo del Toro has gone and announced another one.
The director of HELLBOY II and the producer of THE ORPHANAGE told MTV that he’s hard at work in pre-production for an updated version of Mary Shelley’s FRANKENSTEIN. Problem is, with the writers’ strike still ongoing, he is limited to drawing sketches of his ideas for the film – he’s not even doing the notes he started writing before the strike. Talk about dedication to principles…
Del Toro feels he has a “definitive take” on the character, reminding us that the book actually has two “monsters”: the Creature itself, and the man who created it. He also states that “The only way to do the Shelley novel is to actually do a four-hour miniseries…But I think there [are] permutations in which you can tell the myth in a different way.” It’s been reported elsewhere that this means he is doing a four-hour miniseries, but the comment in the quoted interview is too ambiguous to make such a definite statement – and besides, there’s still that damned strike to get past.
