For those skeptical about the casting possibilities, Stoff has the following to say: “Flak about choices is meaningless until people see the movie," he notes. "When people see the movie, then criticism has a place in it.”
Does Stoff think that American audiences that aren’t familiar with the anime will have trouble getting aboard?
“No, I really don’t think they will,” says Scoff. “I think they haven’t [gotten aboard] with the anime because it’s had limited exposure - it’s just been on Adult Swim, and so on. Hollywood needs to be stopped, it doesn't matter if the producer met with the creator and is going to be faithful. It's about knowing the source material. By casting Keanu as Spike shows that they don't understand it. Keanu doesn't have the acting skills to even try to portray Spike. Spike has too much personality for Keanu. He will just act this like all his other parts and that is terribly. No matter how well the story is written it all matters on how it is acted. Keanu cannot, how has his career even survived this long?

She couldnt hear over the roar of energy to tell if she made a sound. Once she found it, she turned it toward his breath, met his lips with hers. Brevin gave thought to seeing his own mother but decided to visit his brother instead. Her sinewy warrior had to pummel someone on a regular basis or he became antsy. Little by little, she came back to herself. Just because theyd agreed didnt mean she didnt feel the urge. Hyles warm smile displayed his confidence. Gala rolled her eyes, smacking him lightly before she pushed up to sit. Brevin had called them teasing on more than one occasion. You need to understand that I wont stand in the way anymore. Would be nice if she mentioned the word love. Brevin had stepped aside, a huge shadow beside Tykirs shoulder. Thoughts rolled over one another in her head. But Brevins weight kept her where she was. She wiggled, and he stopped. I love you too, he murmured, thrusting slowly. You may be different, but you most certainly belong. It wasnt real, you know. I wouldnt want to deny you. A lifetime isnt enough to tell you how I feel about you.

She raced down them, not slowing when she reached ways that were unfamiliar to her. Not so strange to be fucking Hyle, but where had the compulsion come from? Is the casting of this spell anything like the one that changes women to raedjour? They had him clean in moments. She wanted to lash out, but she was having trouble finding a focus. Her heart rate followed suit. Had grown up together under the same master. Eyrhaen glanced over her shoulder to meet Radins triumphant smile. Or even project emotion on him. Anything but admit she was wrong, even if she now knew she had been. They wanted her to bleed? I cant apologize any more tonight. I didnt say we werent mad. Oh yes, this was right. Then, when she started babbling, begging for more, he picked up speed. His attention drifted down to watch as she wrapped fingers around his cock. You may be different, but you most certainly belong. In the time shed had with them, Eyrhaen had been a main point of discussion. There should be more of you in this world. He growled, a pleasant rumble against her breasts.

I'm not sure what to say about this... it could work, but then again, I could also inherit Bill Gates' fortune tomorrow. All-in-all, it will mostly depend on the casting and the writing as to whether we get well-aged filet mignon (the original anime), or the usual Hollywood tripe (most everything being made there, nowadays). While, I, for one, did enjoy most of the "Matrix" trilogy, "Constantine" was pretty cool, "Point Break" and the first "Speed" are classics, what truly made those movies great was the supporting casts: Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Patrick Swayze (rest his soul), Gary Busey, Dennis Hopper, and Jeff Daniels. Can Keanu do it? Maybe, but certainly not on his own, and there are definitely others better suited to the role of Spike. I whole-heartedly agree that Ron Perelman would make a near perfect Jet Black (although, like Keanu, he is more than a bit old for that character). Faye will be tough, but Charlize Theron and Kelly Hu (as recommended by others) would both make excellent starting points (after I ask.com'd live action "Cowboy Bebop," I was directed to a site that featured a picture of an unknown girl, dressed as Faye, the looked so much like her that I did a double take, maybe they can get her!). As for Ed, Ein, and the rest of the "Bebop" character universe, we'll just have to wait and see. For certain, this will be a tough sell to both hard-core otaku, and the ignorant masses, but I am still very interested to see the finished product. Still, I am left wondering, what is with this current fascination with making live action anime? Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell (who will possibly make a good, live action Major Kusanagi?), what will be next, Gurren Laggen, Excel Saga, Fullmetal Alchemist, FLCL, Lupin III?

I think that Cowboy Bebop it's a great opcion for a hollywood live action. The public will understad it completly without adaptations becose its a very "western" anime with no diference with any blockbuster action film. Not like dragon ball, the producers dont't need to adapt the script for the stupid americans.

On the contrary. People who admire this story and it's character would love to see them come to life. By portraying these characters with sloppy acting and poorly written dialogue you ruin that image for the real fans. It's as simple as that. Your response is rather vaugue to say the least.

Scoff is full of himself already. I know this movie is headed for disaster. He claims that we have no right to criticize his choices about the actors untill the movie itself is made. Yet he places little emphasis on what impact this will have on the movie itself. So what do you expect us to do, have faith that you wont ruin this anime child of ours while we watch you blindly cast whatever highest paid actor lines up to take the cut. I don't think we will turn a blind eye to this insult. This is a beautiful story, and Scoffs eyes are on the money. Not the fans, obviously. He places little concearn over such. So how do you think the film will turn out. He better start getting his act together while he still works for fox. Or else this will turn our like dragonball Z (of which I am not a fan, but am aware of the dissapointment). For those of you who have seen a great story go to waste, I feel your pain. I too would like to see something of such great admiration come light in better ways.

If that happens then I will pray that fox will get millions or billions of money cause they're so greedy in every projects that they will make….

Cowboy Bebop is an absolute masterpiece. The live action adaptation will come no where near the splendor of the original anime, but you can't really expect it to. How bout fox goes to bermuda for the next year or two until the movie's done, and instead of using someone I'd associate with a movie like, say, spiderman, they get an all-japanese cast, english subs, and make an attempt to get some semblance of the truly sublime, soul-touching power behind the show we've all come to love. The only difference should be that it's live action. That's it. That way, everyone who never heard of it purely because of the fact that it's an Anime series will not only take it seriously but derive the enjoyment and enlightenment that this masterpiece is capable of producing.
I say the make a Saw VI and put Keanu in that. As a dead body. He'll be perfect.

And knowing that FOX is apart of this i'm SKEPTICAL! I hate FOX network... they are more like FOX NOISE or FIXED NEWS... the only thing FOX has going for them is family guy which they almost canned... and well lets see KOTH is canned!
THIS BETTER BE GOOD!

I dont know just yet i'll have to see some video before i can judge... he looks similar to spike which may be one of the reasons they cast him but.. i will say that i am not a HUGE fan of him... the only movie i really liked him in was SCANNER DARKLY.... and thats probably because the rest of the cast was PHENOMENAL!

Really? Really Fox? Keanu, William Shatners school of acting, Reeves? Do you even listen to the fans at all? fans who pay your bills. Fans who really really love the story, the charecters and expect a version of Cowboy Bebop to be in the realm of, well, Cowboy Bebop? Appiarently, no you do not. You found the first guy you could think of with a little martial arts to his credit and said 'Hey, lets cast him!' No matter that you've not seen/read the anime and could figure out in less than five minutes that Mr Reeves cannot, is flat UNable to pull off the kind of charisma/attitude and charm of the Spike Spiegle. He just doesnt have the range. A robot, yes! Absolutly! Spike actually has emotion, charecter flaws and ticks that were well transformed into someone we cared about by just a voice. It had RANGE. It has EMOTION. It had STYLE. It WAS Bebop. You,Fox have no style. You have no credit with the fans. You didnt take the time to cast this right and now you dont have my time, or my money.

I think that everyone should just wait and see before going and criticizing it :( But I think its impossible to turn Dragonball into a live action film without it being horrible(Like that super mario movie they made in the early 90s) As for Inuyasha...no, but Bleach.....Maybe. I think a Bleach movie could work if you got all the right actors(especialy for ichigo)

Dear God, I was Both shocked and impressed to hear that somebody is trying to tackle the monumental task of successfully putting Dragonball into a Live Flick, The idea seemed daunting to me at first, but I was never really that attached to the Dragonball series as a whole, and Thusly was not too bothered about how it may turn out.
But This, Dear God, This. If They Screw up Cowboy Bebop there will be blood. Seriously, I know that my opinion wont stop them from making this movie now that its getting in gear, But so help me god if they muck this up I am going to get some blood.
Unlike Dragonball, Cowboy Bebop has a Strong position in my life, Right next to food and oxygen. Without it, I would feel half the man I used to be.
Not that Im not open to the concept of Anime/Game/Manga crossing over into the realm of Live action, If they do this well I will love them for the rest of my life for breathing some fresh air into the Bebop Franchise.
its just in my opinion, Crossing over into Live-action has yet to be done without brutally killing the original.
If they take this away from me, Seriously, 'Fit hits the Shan' and Heads will fly.
DO. NOT. F***. THIS. UP.

Shit, shit, SHIT. Why the hell does FOX feel the need to crap all over Japanese animation and comics. First they decide they want to crap all over one of the best kids anime/manga Dragon Ball now this. I agree that if all of a sudden you hate Bebop after this flops its way on to the big screen you were probly never a real fan to start with but it pisses me off that this may tarnish the grate reputation the series has for people who may not have seen the series or may just be starting to take an interest in anime. But what really pisses me off is that the creators of these great shows/comics are just signing the rights off to two bit studios like FOX, Surely if there going to be dumb enough to make a live action version of there work THEY should be in charge of making it. Being a HUGE fan of Bebop and various other anime im really disappointed, they will never be able to catch the essence or find actors good enough to play the characters of Bebop, I just hope I don’t think of Keanu whatever the hell his name is when I rewatch it after this. I guess I could sit here bitching all night about the whole artistic license thing doesn’t work and some things are perfect the way they are but im going to bed, I leave with saying ‘This blows”.

Almost 4got....I don't know how tall Edward Norton is, but i thought he could play the role as Spike Spiegel, and just train him in the martial arts like the Bruce Lee style, and philosophy (like mentioned in the series anime volume 1) and go from there. All i can see is Cowboy Bebop got 2 start off dark, gritty, spontaneous humor, and appeals to everyone into a cool futuristic film.

A Cowboy BeBop Live Action Film is a cool idea, I am already hyped-up about it, just thinking of it and can't w8 2 C it on tha BIG screen.
Now, this is jus' an idea of who(m) could possibly play/pick the actors for tha characters...
Ron Pearlman, or Ving Rhames as Jet Black
Kelly Hu, or Angelina Jolie as Faye Valentine
A trained Pembroke Welsh Corgi/CG3D as Ein
(note: now i do not know who could play Ed, i can't help ya)
but please not Dakota Fanning, but i wouldn't be surprised,
and of course, Orlando Bloom as Spike Spiegel, but i am hearing rumours and a strong possibility rumours that Keanu Reeves as Spike. (no comment)/(no words of disrespect)
(ill jus keep it 2 myself). *sighs**
But with that in mind,...if Keanu will play the role, you got to have Vicious, one of the character, an actor to really pull it off to make you believe that Spike and Vicious really hate each other to kill one another (film wise).
So to play Vicious?...[thinkin']....
Billy Zane or John Statham as Vicious (some1 more sinister)
Now i do not know who can play Julia? prehaps Charlize Theron maybe, i think she can play a perfect part.
Now for the music, you must keep it to it's original more cool jazzy-style a little funk twist to it, of course the music composer by Yoko Kanno and the SeatBelts, but they should have Dave Koz, Norman Brown, Rick Braun, Boney James, Paul Hardcastle/JazzMasters, and a little Miles Davis, Chet Baker, just to name a few.
If Hollywood has given the green light to do a live-action Cowboy BeBop film, you can't have a cool movie without some cool smooth jazz to it, it's like making Kool-aid without sugar on a hot summer's day.
All i know, from what i've already read about Akira, Leonardo DiCaprio is starring the role for that one, all i know is that i will wait 'til it comes 2 dvd; and i will let a friend rent it 4 me.
Cowboy Bebop live-action? You better make it work, on the BIG screen, cast, music and all.

No. Before anyone tries to say "This might be good, i mean look at (Obligatory refrence to film that people think is good that used to be some other form of media)" This will be shite. I know it will. The emotion will be gone, especially with 'Whats that in the distance I'm looking at' Reeves. There will be a sex scene or love interest throughout, or at least make it more obvious Etcetera. It will not be funny, Bebop's strange and irreverant humor will not work if done by americans, it will just be SHIT. There will be an immediate goal, and this will cause the whole structure to collapse. One of the main plot points is the crew's constant hunger and fighting bounties just to eat. This will not be possible in a 2 hour film. The only way the soundtrack would be good is if they took the music straight from the anime, no remix or anything, and even then it wouldnt link up with episode titles and stuff, making the mainly mainstream audience (Read: Dumb) feel confused. I severely doubt they will *SPOILER* let the main character and his love interest die at the very end, and also leave you with a real bad feeling, i.e the little "You're gonna carry that weight" message right at the end. the cast will be SHITE. The music will be SHITE. The probably reworked plot will be SHITE. This film will be SHITE!

Comic book characters have several different interpretations and hundreds of stories to be told. We types of people can accept a live action adaptation of a comic book character. But, when you get Shinichiro Watanabe characters perfectly developed by 26 animated episodes, a full length animated feature, and a story with a conclusion, then a live-action adaptation would be silly. Japanimation? Wasn't that considered a derogatory term these days. Such an old term I've not heard in years. In anycase, there have been many shows in Japan that went animation and vice versa, seemed to work for them. Not to mention, I've noticed this conversion happening since the early 90s. So why not give it a shot? The way I see it is, if you don't like it when it comes out, don't watch it, put your money towards something you will enjoy. Even in long running anime series, there have been story arcs that are great and some that people pretend just never happened. It will always be hit or miss. Case in point, I for one have viewed the live action Death Note and viewed it with others at a convention, they seemed to enjoy it quite a lot. If anyone should be worried, I might show more concern that the anime is going live action in a cross cultural environment. Ergo, Bebop anime done in Japan, Live action done in America. I have a hard time believing that some cultural guidelines won't be forced alter something for an american audiance, especially if they wish to pull in a mainstream crowd.

right.. don't comment/criticize or perhaps bring forth whatever statement that could carry negative connotation until the movie has been paid for and watched; thus work credit and all financial profits have been given to the producer despite the possibilities of unpromising circumstances even prior to the release. after much of what matters for the investors have come to past, then let the people judge. okay, i'm not sure what's on this "producer's" mind, or perhaps it's simply not in his interest to mention how a lot of times not the best cast is chosen due to conflicts of financial interest, schedule, last minute behind the scene discussion or short-sighted judgment by hollywood conservatives to try to fit movies in the cliche american movie's story psyche. despite all the circumstances where it could seem only reasonable to even be slightly prejudiced to say that the movie will do poorly, audiences shall give up even the chances for objective observation, but just watch the movie, pay first, then perhaps the opinions will matter somewhere out there when the cast crew is drinking champagne. okay.

And I would like to be the first to sincerely offer Keanu a position on the film. I would like him cast as "Thug #3" whose only spoken line is, "Whoaa..." after getting laid out by one of the Bebop characters: Jet, Spike, or Ein :) I'm not picky. Git'im Ein!!

Copied and pasted from an interview with the creator of Cowboy Bebop, Shinichiro Watanabe. ================ Fansub downloads are a controversial topic among the anime fans, but Watanabe-san didn’t seem to be primarily concerned with the piracy aspect. Instead he was more concerned with the artistic and technical quality of his work being maintained. “I spend a lot of time on the colors and sounds in my work.” he said. “If you’re viewing the shows in low quality on a small screen like a computer, then it’s not really my work.” ====================
So, I consider a live-action Cowboy Bebop to be "low quality". So this version is not really the work of Shinichiro Watanabe.

We sometimes go in LOOKing for problems or flaws or things that have changed in the movie as a anime fan when we shouldn't do that. Don't expect a direct adaption or for everything to happen exactly like in the anime. Why repeat whats already been done? They may add a new chapter to the story or just may be its stand alone movie wish a possible sequel who knows. Treat it as any other box office movie. If done right theres so much potential for it to be a box office hit. If the Seatbelts and Yoko Kanno help on the soundtrack or its done similar to the bebop jazzy style they did it. It's gonna be awesome. Let's all just wait and see, and try not to get so pissed. The anime market is kind of in a slump at the moment if a movie like this were to take off. Bandai could market more Bebop Dvds and merchindise. Could be short lived but you'd see a lot more bebop fans out there, even if they aren't into anime. Even if its just a shirt with a cheesy one liner on it...Let's go in tring to enjoy the movie...the way we come out is up to the director and actors.

Aw, relax and give it a chance, people. I know the natural instinct is to bellyache every time an American company touches a Japanese media product with a ten foot pole, but not all touches are Bad Touch.
Seriously, though, if there's one anime in the galaxy that would translate well into an American film, it's Cowboy Bebop. 'Sides, what, are we all going to be tied down in chairs and our eyes propped open with the splinters of our systematically destroyed original-series DVDs to watch the thing? Unlikely.
And hey, imagine if they got Joss Whedon or similar to do the script. Burn me at the stake for suggesting it, but it could turn out to be the best incarnation of the series yet. ^_~*

I greatly admire this show, and if Hollywood screws it up it probably won't alter our lives, but I'll be royally upset.
I think the makers' hearts are in it, but they'll still likely screw it up... Needless to say, its coming so hope for the best.
I like Keanu Reeves, but he's completely wrong for Spike (unless Reeves seriously re-thinks his entire acting approach). I'd hope for someboy like Guy Pierce or Ryan Gosling.
Faye will be next to impossible or relatively easy to cast if they decide to include her. They need someone with the spunk of Reese Witherspoon, the beauty of Kelly Hu and the danger of Milla Jolvovich. Either way you cut it, it doesn't look good.
Jet should be played by someone like Ving Rhames, though I wouldn't cast that actor.
Ed... Well, what in God's name can you possibly do?
I would like it if someone like Vera Farmiga play Julia (check her out near the end of The Departed). She'd be perfect, though I admit, she's too old now.
Heath Ledger could've played Vicious if he was still with us. Unfortunately, Hollywood will probably re-think an entire new mythology that doesn't include original characters. Product placement will also most certainly be a factor.

Why can't hollywood learn from the box office numbers from Speed Racer? People think that making a live action film will help the popularity of Anime. But, Hollywood just sees it as a product to sell. The "anime demographic" is stereotypically the people who would just download the bootleg. Dragonball might make a shitload of money because they are tapping into the kid demographic. But, a pg-13, live-action Cowboy Bebop is a lose/lose situation. Cowboy Bebop would not be the same without Spike kicking a bounty in the face.

Hopefully, Cowboy Bebop will go through production hell like Neon Genesis Evangelion and never get made. I don't support the whole anime to live-action trend. Which is why I am going to buy a ticket for Wall-E and walk into DragonBall. With Erwin Stoff producing, it's pretty obvious that Spike will played by Keanu Reeves. Spike is 27 years old so I guess they are not making a prequel. If the Cowboy Bebop creator and Yoko Kanno work on the film then I might pay to go see it.

I don't doubt it CAN be good, I just feel it would be way to easy to absolutely make a hash out of the film. Past experiences with these sort of movies teaches you to err on the side of "Oh god, not again". Tenative "no" from me.

Take a deep breath, all. Lighten up a bit. Even if a hardcore fan made this movie, 70% of the online otaku community would become blue in the face yelling online at other otaku. What does a bad adaptation of a beloved series do to the quality of the original work? Nothing (apart from give the original creators some cash and another IMDB entry). If it looks awful (assuming it ever comes out, which it may not), don't go see it.
It would be nice if they could get Yoko Kanno to do the score, though.

'How similar will it LOOK to Firefly?' Tone and story content don't pose me any farther concern.
And, personally, I vote:
If a Younger Spike = Chad Michael Murray
If an Older Spike = Adrien Brody

Hey, could be brilliant; theres a decent main story arc that could be simplified down into a film without rushing it, and the characters and world are some of the coolest around.
so long someone breaks Keanu's legs to stop him from playing Spike, and they get the dude who played Hellboy to play Jet.. and they dont ruin the ending..
Otherwise we can just ignore it and enjoy the Anime. I hope they have the sense to get Yoko Kanno to do the soundtrack and keep the multicultural randomness in.
Are they really going to try and do a live-action Akira? What fools....

Having run out of original ideas years ago, it was only a matter of time that Hollywood would start tapping anime for new ideas for their next big budget features. They already started mining comic books and TV adaptations and J-horror flicks (and to a lesser extent, Asian action flicks and romantic comedies; who's seen the American "My Sassy Girl"? yuck).
Anime was the next logical choice for exploitation to keep Hollywood afloat. Aside from butchering the plots and attaching big names to beloved characters just for their supposed star power, Hollywood will no doubt lose a lot in the translation from Japanese anime to Americanized live-action and alienate both the anime fans and Western audiences alike when both sides go, "WTF is this?"

I have been a huge fan of Cowboy Bebop since it was first aired on Cartoon Network in 1998 or so. This show was so far ahead of it's time that it seemed other anime could not even compare to it. Now we have anime being released all over adult swim like it's some sort of plague from the far east. Trust me though, I'd MUCH rather see more anime on adult swim than that other crap they call entertainment. Forget trying to find big names for this movie though. You cannot just go out and cast well-known actors for this. FOX has to cast unknowns or up-and-coming actors who haven't been seen much. The funnest part to cast though will be that of Ed. Best of luck to FOX and thank GOD it's not Warner Brothers who's releasing it! Speed Racer... *shiver*

No surprise that Hollywood wants to cash in on ANYTHING anime-related and successful (Speed Racer, Dragonball). Doing Bebop seems kinda redundant. I mean, the journey of Spike and company was pretty much told in the series and animated movie, right? Unless it's a prequel about Jet and Spike joining forces for the first time, I don't really see how this live action idea is going to work...

Also, there's a live-action Bleach musical. Close enough.
Thankfully, I don't like this series or any of the fore mentioned crappy series, so this will not affect my life at all. Cowboy Bebop wasn't that great to begin with. It had good music. That was about it. Take away the music and it would have been like Outlaw Star or Gundam or whatever else that's in the future and in space.
