THE SKINNY: Martin Scorsese has signed on to direct SILENCE, which Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio Del Toro have already signed on to star in. Oscar bait, anyone?
Gael Garcia Bernal (Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN) is also set to sign on.
Based on the Shusaku Endo novel, the plot follows two 17th century Jesuit priests who face persecution when they travel to Japan to spread Christianity. Jay Cocks wrote the adaptation.
Scorsese most recently completed an adaptation of Dennis Lehane's SHUTTER ISLAND with Leonardo DiCaprio.
