Unbeknownst to us in between seasons, there was a secret enclave where all of the heroes assembled around a mystical device to gain greater abilities. Unfortunately for them the mystical ritual backfired when Claire started whining about wanting to be a cheerleader and the wrong special powers were given. Mohinder and Peter were given the ability to share half a brain thus tying them in first place for the award for HEROES universe patsy. Claire was granted a flying boyfriend who has an uncanny ability to establish a life-bond in a matter of weeks. Hiro was granted a bland storyline in the past where it would only later lead to the end of the world. OK, OK enough of my lame attempt to explain character’s sea changes.

In what is hopefully the worst season of HEROES (because the first was fantastic and hopefully future seasons will be as well), the next to the last episode "Truth and Consequences" lands with a thud on an audience that was expecting the same dynamic pacing as the last four episodes.

After spending a huge amount of time focusing on Hiro in the past and Claire in California, the storyline for this season finally got a kick in the ass and moved towards once again saving the world around episode 4 or 5. The pacing has been great; the stories have been more like the first season, and the multitude of characters are for the most part all represented in the individual episodes. But, this latest offering is more of the first part of the season, focusing on only a couple of storylines -- two of which are the new HEROES of Maya (on the run from Mexico with her brother and Syler) and Monica (Micah’s cousin with the instant replay memory). All I can say is thank God they finally killed off Maya’s brother, I have no idea why they waited this long, and hopefully she completely goes to the dark side and gets more interesting or she gets eaten and absorbed by Syler; either way, finish up this storyline because it is a dud.

Now, Monica I actually like and think she has a lot of potential, but it looks like she might die so that Micah can learn the lesson of not thinking life is like a comic book, but I sincerely hope not. Basically, we took a whole episode to tell us the company created the Shanti Virus (big surprise there) and that it is being stored in HRG’s old company in Odessa, Texas.

Ando (James Kyson Lee) should get a medal for this season; in fact give him DL Hawkin’s medal of valor. The poor guy has spent the entire season in a suit in an office waiting for Hiro to come back deliver key plot points and then to disappear again. What the hell? Have the writers completely forgotten how well these two worked as a team. Go back to formula kids…Hiro is only OK on his own; he needs Ando to really make us love him as much as we did last year.

So Noah Bennet isn’t dead. String us along a bit more. The whole Claire crying, wanting to lose her memory, showdown with mom, Bob, and a gun; plus Dad’s ‘funeral’ meant nothing because we knew he is alive and being held by the company. Dropped the emotional ball on that one kiddies.

I have to say I kind of just want this season over so that we can start fresh with a new chapter whenever that may be. The start was rough, the middle was great, and now it feels like the end (rushed due to the writers’ strike) is hurried and patchworked. I have faith that all of this can be turned around for season three, but I think at the moment that HEROES needs to take a break and return to formula, figure out what made season one so special and try to re-capture some of the magic that made it a hit in the first place.
