TV Review: FRINGE - SEASON ONE FINALE - 'There's More Than One of Everything'

An amazing finale to a suburb first season of one of the best shows on TV

Sorry but that’s my only reaction to the ending of FRINGE’s first season as Olivia (Anna Torv) looks out of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.
 
Yes, the World Trade Center. But not in our reality. In an alternate reality where things are very similar but just slightly different. Or in this case, very different.
 
We learned for sure what we have been slowly told over the past back half of FRINGE – that there is indeed an alternate reality and yes we can get to it. While the payoff of seeing William Bell (guest starring Leonard Nimoy) was short and sweet, I imagine we will get more into the mystery man next season and his actual role in all of this as well as his connections, if any, to the ZFT cult that has been doing open experiments in our reality on the population.
 
Since Nicholas Boone, ZFT cultist from “Midnight,” told the Fringe team before he died that Bell was not only behind the ZFT cult but funding them and the conspiracy theorist from “The Road Not Taken” also said the same thing. He probably has some explaining to do.

Granted, it certainly doesn’t appear that he is working with them given Massive Dynamic’s CEO Nina Sharp’s association with the MD founder, Bell, and that Sharp worked with the Fringe team to stop David Jones from crossing over into the alternate reality in order to kill or kidnap Bell. Still, it could turn out that Sharp and Bell could be behind it all and Jones was the good guy. At this point we don’t know. But given that Jones shot Sharp and took the power source from her arm to enable the cross-reality portal device, they can’t be considered friends.

We learned something nearly equally as important. That Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) isn’t from our reality but is from this alternate reality. I said a while back – when we learned that Peter had an accident when he was young and Walter (John Noble) had to bring him from the brink of death and nurse him back to health – that Peter was not the same person he was originally. At the time, I thought Walter had cloned him and that Peter had really died that day. I was right but the explanation of Walter traveling to the alternate reality to get back something he “had lost dearly” makes for even better fodder.
 
Obviously, this opens up a whole can of worms as to the reason Peter is the way Peter is – always in trouble, hanging with the wrong crowds of criminal elements and quick to judge – as he is from a skewed reality where things are just slightly different, or in this case, Peter is slightly askew.
 
But this is how a finale should be, especially to a show in its first season. Fast paced, super slick and breathless with enough answers and more questions to have us begging for more. I can’t wait to see more next season.  
 
Speaking of questions, here are some left from “There’s More Than One of Everything:”
  • We still no nothing about The Observer at all, other than he seems to know and be able to cross to both realities and knows Walter.
  • Why does Nina have such a powerful device in her arm?
  • Why does the ZFT cult need William Bell? Or want to kill him?
  • What makes him so special if he isn’t the one that was funding them and their crazy experiments?
  • If it is so hard to get to the other side, the other reality, why is the ZFT cult preparing for war?
  • Or is it that hard given Olivia was able to just take an elevator ride there?
  • If there is more than one of everything, does that mean there are two Olivias? Two Charlies? Two Walters? Two Ninas? Two Observers? We know there is only one Peter left.
  • If both realities are similar, why is there a war happening?
  • If there are more than one of everything does that mean only one can live in the same space?
  • Is the scientists in the alternate reality also working on experiments for the coming war?

Always been a huge X-Files fan, after the 9th season we have been waiting for another show to come up along the lines of the paranormal with a strong story line, and then Fringe came. Very interesting ideas to play with! Looking forward to see what they explore in season 2.

I disagree on your view of 2 of everything. The way walter explained it was that each action had a seperate universe. Which meant that there would be almost endless amounts of these and the small shifts between in the context of happening millions of times would collapse everything into a war where one universe was supreme. However it seems unlikely the show will go in that way. This is a "multiverse". Probably billions of clones not just 2

I think Olivia was able to pass over so easily because of the advanced and artificially enhanced (drug trials) abilities everyone seems to value her for so much. My question is since everyone wants her so badly and they took her to the other side without telling her first, are they going to allow her to return? Or are they going to recruit her help for something on the "other side."

Fringe is sooo addictive...I watched it by chance and have been hooked ever since!! I think "rancor34"'s predictions are dead on. Can't wait for season 2!!

What if ZFT IS being funded and trained by William Bell... but it is the "other" William Bell... or for that matter it could be the other Dr. Bishop who ALSO loves his son equally strong... and is willing to cause a war between the realities to get him back or to make sure the theft of a child does not happen to someone else. This would open up the opportunity to in some way make the ZFT look like good guys and our Dr. Bishop as "evil" . ZFT then looks like a rebel operation bent on keeping us out of thier reality or destoying this reality to prevent a takeover... but only if Bell is seen as an enemy. If he ( the Bell we saw in the twin towers) is funding ZFT... all bets are off. LOl I love this show... Nemoy was a nice choice for Bell... reminds me a bit of the old "Mirror, Mirror " episode of Star trek... evil Spock/ W Gotee etc.... Hmmm... inspiration for what is happening maybe? I also liked the little tribute by the conspiricy theorist in the episode before last who theorized the comming war was going to be with the Romulans. That was priceless. ;)
